Institute Location
The Institute will take place on the Tempe Campus of Arizona State University, in the heart of the vibrant and diverse Phoenix metropolitan area. The bulk of the Institute will take place in the newly-renovated spaces of ASU’s Homer G. Durham Languages and Literatures building, home to the School of International Letters and Cultures (SILC).
Home to more than five million people, the Phoenix metro area offers an incredible array of fine dining, cultural and arts experiences, and chances to experience the unique flora and fauna of the Sonora Desert. We recommend in particular ASU’s Gammage Theatre, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, the Phoenix Art Museum (a visit to which is included in the Institute schedule), the Desert Botanical Gardens, and the Heard Museum, one of the world’s pre-eminent collections of Native American art and culture.
During their stay in Tempe, Institute participants will be offered accommodation through ASU Guest Housing, which offers affordable, apartment-style housing for visiting scholars. University housing units include kitchens, Wifi access, private bathrooms, high-power air conditioning, and complimentary laundry facilities, as well as easy access to university libraries, classrooms, printing, and other resources. Meal plans are available through ASU, as is parking for participants who wish to bring their own cars. For participants without cars, university housing is immediately adjacent to the Tempe Light Rail, which provides direct access to groceries, shopping, and the cultural resources of downtown Phoenix.
