James Rush teaches courses on Southeast Asia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Asia in Western Fiction and graduate seminars on colonialism. His research interests include Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, etc.), colonialism, Islam, and modern Asian biography. He has published Opium to Java: Revenue Farming and Chinese Enterprise in Colonial Indonesia, 1860-1910 (1990), The Last Tree: Reclaiming the Environment in Tropical Asia (1991) and Java: A Traveler’s Anthology (1996) and several short biographies and articles. His current work-in-progress is tentatively titled Hamka’s Great Story: Islam for Indonesia.
