Chinese Painting/Approaches to Chinese Painting

Offered:TTh 10:30am–11:45am

Location:ART220

Instructor:Caludia Brown

Description:This course will explore the history of Chinese painting from its earliest origins to the present. Through illustrated lectures and direct study of paintings, especially those in the Roy and Marilyn Papp Collection on loan to the Phoenix Art Museum, and through readings, discussion, lectures, and writing assignments, the class will investigate the development of Chinese landscape and figure painting traditions. Individual works of art and major styles will be studied in their historical context and in relation to their broader cultural background, including religion, philosophy, literature and political and social history. Lectures and discussions will cover issues in connoisseurship, patronage and art theory, and will compare evidence from archaeology and documentary sources. A special event funded by the ASU Institute for Humanities Research and The Marilyn and Roy Papp ASU – Asian Arts Council – Phoenix Art Museum Chinese Painting Program will be part of the curriculum. Dr. Janet Baker, Curator of Asian Art, Phoenix Art Museum, and other Chinese art scholars will participate in discussions. For more information, contact Dr. Claudia Brown by email (claudia.brown@asu.edu) or phone (480 965-2409).

Gamelan

Offered:M 4:30pm–6:00pm

Location:GGMA206

Instructor:Ted Solis

Description:All are welcome to join the ASU Javanese Gamelan study group. We require no audition, nor any prior experience whatever. The Javanese gamelan is an Indonesian traditional ensemble consisting of tuned bronze gongs and metallophones (tuned metal bars, like xylophones) of different sizes, plus a wooden xylophone, bamboo flute, plucked zither, bowed fiddle, drums, and vocal chorus. We learn everything by ear. Instrument roles range from very simple, learned by rote, to more challenging ones which involve some improvisation. The gamelan provides a stimulating experience in group interaction.

Instructor:Smita Kothari

Description:In discussions of the interrelationship of religion and ecology, the South Asian religious traditions of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism are often celebrated for their advocacy of nonviolence, recognition of the interdependence of all beings, and deep reverence for the natural world. At the same time, they have also been criticized for downgrading the material world, thus fostering indifference to environmental crises. In this section, we seek to understand how members of these religious communities have conceptualized the relationship between humans, the divine, and the natural world. We will examine the symbols, images, and doctrines through which this relationship is articulated in ancient texts, and the ways in which they are evoked by contemporary South Asian environmental justice movements addressing issues such as pollution, overpopulation, deforestation, river dam projects, and the effects of climate change.
