Steele awardee for his work “Religion and the Conquest of India.” Professor Henn is pursuing theAlexander Henn hypothesis that the early-modem Portuguese /Catholic encounter with the, until then, largely unknown religious traditions of Hinduism was directly related to a profound reappraisal and transformation of the modern Western and by implication Christian notion of ‘religion’.
